Manipulation Under Anesthesia at Newark Pain and Rehab Center

backmassage.jpgManipulation under anesthesia, or MUA, is available at our Newark Pain and Rehab Center in New Jersey. If you experience chronic pain in your back, we have the solution for providing real and long lasting pain relief. We provide treatment for back pain patients in Newark and the surrounding areas of East Orange, Ironbound and Irvington.

Dr. Saraceno's skilled chiropractic manipulations help restore normal functioning for your back, shoulders, legs and arms. When your pain in those areas of your body is so severe that it doesn't respond to normal treatments; however, Dr. Saraceno is also experienced in a technique known as manipulation under anesthesia, or MUA. MUA is a suitable option for patients under extreme conditions, such as those who don't respond to spinal decompression techniques; those whose only alternative to relieving their pain is surgery; or those who need corrections to failed surgical procedures.

MUA: Specialized Chiropractic Treatment

Manipulation under anesthesia, or MUA, was formerly a physical therapy procedure offered only by osteopathic practitioners. It has a high rate of success--as much as 90 percent--for many forms of chronic back pain and conditions, such as sciatica, as well as chronic shoulder pain and chronic pain in arms and legs.
Patients remain conscious, but sedated, during a MUA procedure. This prevents them from experiencing muscle spasms and contractions as natural reactions to the passive range of motion activities, applied chiropractic treatments and ongoing therapy designed to increase flexibility.
As the anesthesia wears off, the patient enters the valuable phase of post-MUA treatment. During this time, he or she receives another round of similar passive range of motion exercises as well as inferential stimulation and cryotherapy. Inferential stimulation uses mild electrical currents to stimulate underlying nerves while cryotherapy uses cold towels or ice compresses to alleviate swelling.

Patients may need up to three MUA treatments, depending on the severity of their conditions, but not usually more than four. Dr. Saraceno will customize the length of treatment to the individual patient's needs.
