What is Sciatica?

Our Chiropractor Explains Sciatica

back_pain_med.jpgIf you suffer from it, you don't have to be told about the often intense pain that can result from pressure on the sciatic nerve. This chronic condition, first reported in 1451, can result in lower back pain, leg pain, and that feeling of pins and needles in your lower extremities. At Newark Pain and Rehab, we see many patients from Newark, East Orange, Ironbound, and Irvington that are suffering the effects of sciatica.

What Causes Sciatic Pain?

Sciatica is a broad term used to describe pain that results from the compression of one of five nerves that lead to the sciatic nerve, which runs from the pelvis down the leg. When one of these nerves is compressed or irritated, patients can feel pain in the back, buttock, and down the entire leg. Other symptoms can include numbness, weakness in the muscles of the lower back and leg, and problems with moving the leg properly. Often, for sciatica patients, the pain or symptoms are associated with only one side of the body where the affected nerve travels down the leg.

Treatment Options for Sciatica Sufferers

Several techniques are used to treat the back pain and leg pain associated with damage to the sciatic nerve. One such technique is spinal decompression, where our chiropractor, Dr. Saraceno, uses a computer-operated table that alternately stretches and relaxes the back muscles. Other techniques effective in treating such pain include massage and even acupuncture. Manual spinal adjustments have also been shown to be effective in relieving the pressure on the nerve causing the pain.

Our Newark Pain and Rehab Center offers a wide range of pain management and wellness services, including chiropractic care, holistic medicine, physical therapy, and lifestyle counseling. Our chiropractor in Newark, Dr. Saraceno, also serves the Orange, Ironbound, and Irvington areas.
